The Chanyungco House is one of the few old houses that still stands and is well-preserved in Barangay San Roque, Marikina City. According to the Marikina City guide, the house was “founded by a wealthy shoe manufacturer, Thomas Chanyungco whose father was a pure Chinese. He owned the then famous Gandara Shoes in Tondo, Manila.”
Also, it is in this house where Marikina dance artist Simeona (originator of Lerion and Balsa Marikina dances) made her home for her family. The house I think serves as the HQ for the SFCKLM dance organization, the foundation that honors Simeona. Here is a YouTube Video of the Lerion Marikina dance performed inside the Chanyungco House.
I visited the house last July 8 together with my high school classmates – Ruth Banares David (who is a prize-winning photographer), Ces Afuang and Emma Balderama who served as our guide with Vic David (Ruth’s husband) as our driver (hah!). We were able to tour inside the house from the invitation of our classmate, Eloy Chanyungco Masbad, daughter of Simeona. Emma is also a niece of Simeona.
